Walking to Tirumala - The Sacred Footpath Experience

Walking up to Tirumala via the ancient footpaths is considered one of the most spiritual experiences for devotees of Lord Venkateswara. It is believed that the merit of darshan increases manifold when you make the physical effort to climb the sacred hills. Two main routes are available.

Alipiri Footpath (Main Route)

DetailInformation
Starting PointAlipiri, Tirupati
Distance11 km (approximately)
Steps3,550 stone steps
Duration3-4 hours (average fitness)
DifficultyModerate - well-maintained stone steps
Open Hours24 hours (24/7)
RewardDivya Darshan token at top

What to Expect

The Alipiri footpath is the traditional and most popular walking route. It starts from the Alipiri gate near Tirupati town and ascends through dense forest. The path is well-maintained with stone steps, rest shelters every few hundred meters, drinking water points, and toilet facilities. The climb is gradual with a few steep sections.

Tips for Alipiri Trek

  • Start early morning (4-5 AM) to avoid heat
  • Carry 2 liters of water and light snacks
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes (remove before temple)
  • Take breaks at shelters - don't rush
  • Carry a torch/phone flashlight if starting before dawn

Srivari Mettu (Short Route)

DetailInformation
Starting PointNear Chandragiri
Distance2 km
Duration1-2 hours
DifficultyModerate to Hard - steeper gradient
Open Hours3 AM to 8 PM
RewardDivya Darshan token

Srivari Mettu is a shorter but steeper alternative. It is approximately 2 km long and takes 1-2 hours. The gradient is steeper than Alipiri, making it more physically demanding despite the shorter distance. Best suited for moderately to highly fit individuals.

Divya Darshan - The Reward

Both walking routes earn you a Divya Darshan token at the top of Tirumala. This token grants priority darshan with shorter wait times than Sarva Darshan (free) - typically 2-4 hours total. Collect your token at the counter immediately after reaching the top. This makes the walk not just spiritually rewarding but practically beneficial too.

Who Should NOT Walk

  • Senior citizens (65+) and very young children
  • Persons with heart conditions or respiratory issues
  • Pregnant women (especially in later months)
  • Anyone with knee problems or mobility issues
  • During heavy monsoon rains (July-August) - paths can be slippery

For those who cannot walk, APSRTC buses from Tirupati to Tirumala run 24/7 (Rs 75-200). See our travel guide for all transport options.
