Tirupati Temple Dress Code - Everything You Need to Know

Sri Venkateswara Temple at Tirumala enforces a strict traditional dress code for all devotees. This code is checked at the entry gates and violators are turned away. Understanding and following the dress code is essential for a smooth darshan experience.

Dress Code for Men

Allowed

  • Dhoti (pancha/veshti) with upper cloth - traditional and most appropriate
  • Kurta pajama or kurta with dhoti
  • Formal trousers with full-sleeve or half-sleeve shirt - tucked in
  • Panchakacham (traditional Brahmin style dhoti)

Not Allowed

  • Shorts, bermudas, 3/4th pants, capris
  • Torn or ripped jeans
  • Sleeveless shirts, tank tops, vests
  • T-shirts with offensive prints
  • Lungi (considered too casual)

Dress Code for Women

Allowed

  • Saree - most traditional and preferred
  • Salwar kameez / churidar with dupatta
  • Half-saree (langa voni) - traditional South Indian
  • Anarkali suit with proper coverage

Not Allowed

  • Sleeveless tops or blouses without saree
  • Short skirts, mini skirts
  • Jeans or western pants
  • Leggings without kurta
  • Revealing or transparent clothing

Dress Code for Children

Children under 12 are given more flexibility but should still wear appropriate Indian attire. Boys can wear kurta-pajama or dhoti, and girls can wear traditional dresses or salwar kameez. Shorts are generally allowed for very young children (under 5).

Special Dress Code for Sevas

For arjitha sevas (temple rituals), the dress code is stricter. Men must wear white dhoti and uttariya - shirts are not allowed. Women must wear saree only - salwar kameez is not permitted for sevas. Traditional clothes are available for rent (Rs 50-100) near the temple.

Where to Get Traditional Clothes

If you don't have traditional attire, rental shops are available near the Vaikuntham Queue Complex in Tirumala and near the bus stand in Tirupati. Dhoti sets for men cost Rs 50-100 for rent, and saree sets for women are also available at similar prices.

Key Points to Remember

  • Dress code is strictly checked at entry gates
  • Footwear must be removed before entering (free shoe counters available)
  • No leather belts, wallets, or bags allowed inside
  • Keep your attire clean and presentable
  • When in doubt, choose more conservative/traditional clothing

Also check documents required for darshan to ensure you are fully prepared.
