The Tirupati to Tirumala bus is an Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) service that climbs the ghat road from Tirupati Railway Station and the town's bus stations to Tirumala. The official fare is Rs 90 per adult and Rs 50 per child one way, or Rs 160 and Rs 90 for a return ticket valid for three days. Those figures are as of Oct 2026 — confirm on the TTD portal before you travel. Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) also runs two free bus services: one at the foot of the hills and the Dharmarathams loop inside Tirumala.

This guide is for pilgrims who have just stepped off a train, a long-distance bus or a flight in Tirupati and need to reach the hill shrine in time for a darshan slot. It covers where to board, what you will pay, how the free TTD buses fit in, what changes if you take a taxi or your own car, and how to get back down. Every number below comes from TTD's own pages on tirumala.org, accessed on 18 October 2026. We have deliberately left out the bus timetables and AC fares that circulate on blogs, because TTD does not publish them and we could not verify them.

Tirupati to Tirumala bus: the quick answer

APSRTC buses leave for Tirumala from four points in Tirupati: Tirupati Railway Station, the RTC Central Bus Station, Sri Padmavathi Bus Station and Balaji Link Bus Station. TTD's travel page says these buses run at a frequency matched to pilgrim arrivals rather than to a fixed public timetable, so in practice you walk to the bay and board the next bus heading up the hill.

The buses use the Tirumala ghat roads, a pair of one-way roads, one for going up and one for coming down. According to TTD, the up road is about 17.80 km and the down road about 18.00 km. Both are normally open from 3:00 AM to midnight, 21 hours a day, and TTD may keep them open round the clock on special occasions. If you plan to go up late in the evening, confirm the last departure with APSRTC or TTD on the day of travel, as no fixed timetable is published.

Once you reach the top, you do not need another paid bus. The free Dharmarathams circle Tirumala every eight minutes and stop at the main darshan complexes, cottages and the Annaprasadam complex. With your transport sorted, the next step is a confirmed slot: book your Tirumala darshan early, because the bus gets you to the hill but not into the queue.

APSRTC bus fares and the 3-day return ticket

TTD's official travel page gives a simple fare structure for the APSRTC service. There are only two products, a one-way ticket and a return ticket, and each has an adult and a child price.

TicketAdultChildValidity / notes
One way (Tirupati to Tirumala)Rs 90Rs 50Single journey up the ghat road
Return (up and down)Rs 160Rs 90Bought in Tirupati; valid for 3 days from the date of purchase
Saving on return vs two singlesRs 20Rs 10Worth it only if you will come down within 3 days

Source: tirumala.org, Travelling from Tirupati to Tirumala, accessed 18 Oct 2026. Fares as of Oct 2026, confirm on the TTD portal.

For a family of two adults and two children, a return ticket works out to Rs 500 against Rs 560 for four singles each way. The saving is modest, so the real deciding factor is your stay. If you plan to come back down within three days, a return fits inside its validity; if your stay is longer, buy two singles. If you are going up on foot via Alipiri or Srivari Mettu and only need the bus down, buy a single ticket at Tirumala instead.

Keep the return ticket safe; it is your proof of payment for the downward leg. Do not buy bus tickets from anyone who approaches you on the platform or outside the station. TTD's general advice is to avoid touts, and the official APSRTC counters at the boarding points are the only place you need.

Where to board in Tirupati

All four boarding points below are listed on TTD's travel page. Which one you use depends on how you arrived in Tirupati.

Tirupati Railway Station

If you arrive by train, this is the most convenient pick-up point. Buses to Tirumala leave from outside the station, so you avoid an extra auto ride across town. It is also the starting point of TTD's free bus to Srivari Mettu, described in the next section, which matters if you plan to walk up.

RTC Central Bus Station

Long-distance APSRTC and inter-state buses terminate at the Central Bus Station. Pilgrims coming by road from Chennai, Bengaluru or Hyderabad can change to a Tirumala bus here without leaving the transport network. If you are travelling from Karnataka, our Bangalore to Tirupati bus guide covers the first leg.

Sri Padmavathi Bus Station

Sri Padmavathi Bus Station is a second departure point for the Tirumala service, useful if your hotel or arrival point in Tirupati is closer to it than to the Central Bus Station.

Balaji Link Bus Station

Balaji Link Bus Station is the fourth boarding point listed by TTD. Note that it is in Tirupati and is not the same as Balaji Bus Station in Tirumala, where the return-journey counters are.

Because TTD does not publish a timetable, treat any first-bus or last-bus time you read online as unofficial. TTD says only that frequency follows pilgrim arrivals, so expect more buses when crowds are heavy, but we cannot give a reliable figure. Our Tirupati travel guide has wider context on reaching Tirupati itself.

TTD free buses in Tirupati (railway station to Srivari Mettu)

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams runs a free shuttle in Tirupati for pilgrims who want to climb the hill on foot. TTD's free bus page lists the route as Tirupati Railway Station to Srivari Mettu, served by three buses making 18 trips, roughly one every 45 minutes. The first service runs at about 5:00 AM, the last scheduled departure is around 6:15 PM, and the last trip from Srivari Mettu is at 7:15 PM.

Srivari Mettu is the shorter of the two traditional footpaths: TTD puts it at about 2.10 km and around one and a half hours of climbing. The longer Alipiri path is about 7.80 km and takes roughly three hours. Pilgrims can use TTD's free services or an APSRTC bus to reach either starting point. Trekkers can deposit luggage free at the foot of the hills and collect it at Tirumala, from the GNC counter for Alipiri trekkers and the MBC counter for Srivari Mettu trekkers. We do not repeat the walking detail here; our Alipiri vs Srivari Mettu footpath comparison covers steps, timings and which route suits whom.

Getting around Tirumala on the free Dharmaratham buses

Once you are on the hill, TTD's free Dharmarathams replace any need for autos or taxis between cottages and the temple complexes. According to TTD, a bus arrives every eight minutes, running both clockwise and anticlockwise, round the clock. The route covers the cottage areas, the Annaprasadam complex, Kalyanakatta (the tonsuring centre), the Vaikuntam Queue Complex for Sarva Darshan, the footpath complex for Divya Darshan, and the Special Entry (Seeghra) Darshan complex for Rs 300 ticket holders.

It helps to know which stop matches your ticket. Sarva Darshan (free) pilgrims get off at the Vaikuntam Queue Complex. Those holding a Divya Darshan token from the footpath alight at the footpath complex. Rs 300 ticket holders head for the Special Entry (Seeghra) Darshan complex. If you have not yet secured a slot, sort that out before you travel so you know exactly which stop is yours.

Taxi or own vehicle on the ghat road

TTD allows private cars, taxis and maxi cabs with up to 12 seats on the ghat roads. A taxi is practical for a group with luggage or elderly members, or if you land at Tirupati airport and want to go straight up. We do not quote taxi fares, because TTD does not regulate them and they vary with vehicle and season; agree the price before you set off.

Ghat road hours (3 AM–midnight)

The same 3:00 AM to midnight window applies to private vehicles. TTD also notes that travel-time restrictions apply on the ghat road, so do not plan to race the clock. Drive calmly, use low gears on the descent and do not overtake on hairpin bends. TTD has restricted two-wheeler hours on the ghat roads in the past; check the current rule before riding up.

Sapthagiri toll and vehicle size

Toll is collected at Sapthagiri Toll Plaza on the way up. TTD notes that toll rates may change, so we do not list an amount. TTD's page refers to taxis and maxi cabs of up to 12 seats; check the current rules before hiring anything larger.

Breakdown and emergency numbers

If your vehicle breaks down or you have an accident on the ghat road, TTD lists 0877-2263636 and 9000503089 for its auto clinic and crane service, and 108 for an ambulance. Service charges apply for the breakdown service. Save these numbers before you start.

Alipiri checkpoint

All vehicles and passengers going up by road pass the security check at Alipiri, at the foot of the hills. TTD's Do's and Don'ts require licensed weapons to be declared there. Allow extra time for the check on busy days.

Return journey from Tirumala to Tirupati

If you bought a return ticket in Tirupati, simply board an APSRTC bus going down within three days of purchase. If you came up on foot or by taxi, buy a one-way ticket at Tirumala.

TTD's return-journey page says bus tickets are sold at the Bus Reservation counters at Balaji Bus Station, Tirumala. Do not confuse this with Balaji Link Bus Station in Tirupati, one of the departure points on the way up. If you are taking a train home, you can book or check it at the Railway Reservation counters in the Central Reception Office, Tirumala. That saves a separate trip to the station counters in Tirupati.

Buses go down by the separate down road of about 18 km. Leave plenty of margin if you have a train or flight to catch; queues at the bus station can be long after peak darshan hours and on weekends.

Planning tips: matching your bus to your darshan slot

The darshan slot, not the bus, sets your schedule. Work backwards from the reporting time on your ticket:

  • Arrive in Tirupati with a buffer. Allow time for the bus queue, the Alipiri security check and the ghat road climb, then add a margin for crowds. On festival and holiday weekends, add more.
  • Check your entry point before you leave. Note whether your ticket sends you to the Vaikuntam Queue Complex or the Special Entry (Seeghra) Darshan complex, and take the right Dharmaratham once you are up.
  • Buy a return only if you will come down within three days. Otherwise two singles are simpler.
  • Do not rely on night travel. The ghat roads normally close at midnight. If your train reaches Tirupati late, stay in Tirupati and take an early bus after the 3:00 AM opening.
  • Walking is a real option. Use the free TTD bus from Tirupati Railway Station to Srivari Mettu if you want to climb, and check the last return trip at 7:15 PM.
  • Carry ID and documents for your booking. You will need them at the darshan complex, not on the bus.

Whatever you choose, confirm the fares, ghat road hours and free bus details on the TTD portal close to your travel date, as TTD can change them at short notice, particularly around major festivals.
